Litany

In continuing celebration of All Saints Day (1 Nov), a litany adapted from the Church of England:

All/R Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

For Abraham and Sarah, our ancestors in faith,
and all who journey into the unknown trusting God’s promises;

For Jacob, deceitful younger brother, yet chosen by God,
the father of all who are called by virtue not of their own;

For Moses the lawgiver and Aaron the priest,
and all who lead God’s people to freedom and newness of life: R

For Esther and Deborah, saviours of their nation,
and for all who dare to act courageously at God’s call;

For Hannah and Ruth, and all who through love and devotion
witness to the faithfulness of God;

For Isaiah, John the Baptist and all the prophets,
and all who speak the truth without counting the cost: R

For Mary the Virgin, the mother of our Lord and God,
and all who obey God’s call without question;

For Peter and Andrew and the first disciples,
and for all who forsake everything to follow Jesus;

For Mary Magdalene, Salome and Mary,
first witnesses of the resurrection,
and for all who bear witness to Christ: R

For Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
and for all who bring the faith of Christ alive for each generation:

For Paul and the other apostles,
who preached the gospel to Jew and Gentile,
and for all who take the good news to the ends of the earth;

For Barnabas, Silas and Timothy,
and for all who bring encouragement and steadfastness: R

For the martyrs and peacemakers of our own time,
who shine as lights in the darkness;

For all the unsung heroes and heroines of our faith,
whose names are known to God alone;

For all those in our own lives
who have revealed to us the love of God
and shown to us the way of holiness: R

Let us rejoice and praise them with thankful hearts
All and glorify our God in whom they put their trust.

Psalms

Psalm 80

All God of hosts, look down from heaven, and come to visit this vine of yours.

(I) Shepherd of Israel, listen –
you who take Joseph as your flock.

Shine out before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh –
you who are enthroned upon the cherubim.
Awaken your power and come to us,
come to us and save us.

Bring us back, O God:
let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord God of hosts –
how long will your anger endure
against the prayers of your people?
You have given us tears for our bread,
abundance of tears for us to drink.
You have made us a mockery among our neighbours,
and our enemies laugh at us.

Bring us back, O God of hosts:
let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

(II) You brought a vine out of Egypt;
planted it, and drove out the nations.
You cleared the ground all about it,
made firm its roots; and it filled the land.
Its shade covered mountains,
its boughs shaded the cedars of God;
its leaves spread as far as the sea,
its shoots as far as the River.

So why did you destroy its wall,
so that anyone could pluck its fruit,
whoever was passing by?
The wild boar of the forest broke it,
every wild beast could graze off it.

Turn back, O God of hosts,
look down from heaven and tend this vine.

(III) Protect the vine, for your right hand planted it;
and the son of man, whom you made strong.

The vine is burnt and dug up;
and they too will perish when they see you rebuke them.
Stretch out your hand over your chosen one
over the son of man, whom you made strong –
and we will not forsake you, and you will give us life;
and we will call on your name.

Bring us back, Lord God of hosts:
let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

All God of hosts, look down from heaven, and come to visit this vine of yours.

Short Reading

What great nation is there that has its gods so near as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him?

V. The Lord is close to those who call upon him.
R. He will listen to their prayer.

Let us pray:
Almighty God,
  you are all light,
  in you there is no darkness.
Let your light shine upon us in all its radiance,
  so that we may walk gladly in the way of your commandments.
Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

—Time for prayer, with a particular focus on KLC—
At the end of each petition please say, ‘Lord in your mercy…’ and the rest of us will respond, ‘… hear our prayer.’

Lectio Divina

Presence
I pause for a moment and think of the love
and the grace that God showers on me:
I am created in the image and likeness of God;
I am God’s dwelling-place.

Freedom
I ask for the grace to believe
in what I could be and do
if I only allowed God, my loving Creator,
to continue to create me, guide me and shape me.

Consciousness
Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life? By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit. If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

The Word of God

Luke 15:1-10 NRSVue
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
“Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for
I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Response: Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Inspiration
Jesus reported to His Father that he had not lost a single soul, but today’s story suggests that he had to be very vigilant in order to keep his flock together. We too have the same aim, fearing that the loss of even one individual will reduce the cohesiveness of the group in general. So be with us, Lord, as we try to encourage both ourselves and others to stay vigilant as they – and we – direct our efforts towards a successful conclusion.

Conversation
Friends don’t keep secrets from one another.
As I pray, can I look at Jesus as my friend
and share my innermost thoughts with Him,
trusting that He understands?

Conclusion
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
