A prayer for mercy: a pilgrimage song
To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens;

till he show us his mercy.
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

Thanksgiving for protection: a pilgrimage song
“If the Lord had not been on our side,”
this is Israel’s song.
“If the Lord had not been on our side
when they rose up against us,
then would they have swallowed us alive
when their anger was kindled.
Then would the waters have engulfed us,
the torrent gone over us;
over our head would have swept
the raging waters.”
Blessed be the Lord who did not give us
a prey to their teeth!
Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the fowler.
Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
Unshakable trust: a pilgrimage song
Those who put their trust in the Lord
are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken,
that stands for ever.
Jerusalem! The mountains surround her;
so the Lord surrounds his people
both now and for ever.
The sceptre of the wicked shall not rest
over the land of the just
for fear that the hands of the just
should turn to evil.
Do good, Lord, to those who are good,
to the upright of heart;
but the crooked and those who do evil,
drive them away!
On Israel, peace!

When Moses enter the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. The the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.
V. Look to the Lord that you may be radiant with joy.

You shed light for your disciples, Lord Jesus, on the way to the cross, when they contemplated you on the mountain. Lead us today along this way of lowliness and glory, for you are the Beloved Son, who has the words of life, and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Presence
We remind ourselves that, as we sit here now,
God is gazing on us with love and holding us in being.
We pause for a moment and think of this.
Freedom
Many countries are at this moment suffering the agonies of war. We bow our heads in thanksgiving for our freedom. We pray for all prisoners, captives and those suffering as a result of war.
Consciousness
Lord, grant that we may always desire
to spend time in Your presence.
May we not forget Your goodness to us.
Guide us to share Your blessings with others.
The Word of God
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became bright as light. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Inspiration
Time to be out on the road again – at least in your imagination – with Peter, James and John. This is not an occasion to miss because it may provide you with quite a reservoir of courage and self-belief if demanding times should come your way. That is, I suspect, what it did for the selected few – and hopefully it will for you too. The significance of the moment, plus the knowledge that they had been specially selected, must have stood them in good stead when challenging times came calling. We thank you, Lord, for these moments with you.c

We settle ourselves once again after hearing the Word of God. What would we like to take with us into our day? What do we want to remember from today’s reading or prayer time?
