Apologizing for Public Theology: Part 1

Lesslie Newbigin spent his adult life as a missionary in India, exploring how the gospel related to Indian culture. When he retired to the UK he alerted us that the greatest mission field was on our doorstep, namely Western culture. Newbigin tirelessly opposed the bifurcation between sacred and secular that so many Christians have disastrously adopted from modernity by reminding us that the gospel is public truth. Few things would help the mission of the church and Christians more today than a recovery of this public dimension of the gospel.

This is no easy task and in this wonderful series of short articles we explore from a variety of angles why and how the gospel is indeed public truth. In the process we provide an apology. i.e., a defence of this view. We invite you to read them closely, to think hard about them, to discuss them in groups and share them far and wide, and to engage with them critically so that you can arrive at your own view of the matter.

We’ll add all of the first part of our series to this post as they become available.
