Tota Scriptura: Inerrancy Discussion Event

In March, we are holding an informal event in which you are invited to poke holes in my arguments critiquing Chicago-style inerrancy.

Tota Scriptura is making good but overly wordy progress. I have completed a lengthy critique of the Chicago Statements, not arguing that there is fault in Scripture itself, but rather arguing that the evangelical doctrine of Scripture is guarded by creedal ICBI documents that are not fit for the job they’ve been given and that this is partially to blame for some of the problems we’re currently experiencing in evangelicalism.

I’m biting the bullet and asking you to listen to a handful of my key arguments and then to do your best to poke holes in them. Tell me where I’ve misunderstood, gone too far, failed to account for their actual use etc.

It is risky to aim any critiques at inerrancy, because it’s easy for this to sound like critique of Scripture; I would like to reassure our community that my intention is evaluate the truth of what evangelicals say about Scripture, so that (if any correction of our doctrines is warranted) we can better promote the truths of the Scriptures themselves.

My hypothesis is that modern evangelicalism is failing to be a source of light for the world (at least in the west) and is in some cases being destructive of the faith of its members partially because its doctrine of Scripture has been constructed to provide an illusion of certainty and control that is easy to abuse and bad at making disciples.

The discussion group will be small and preference will be given to KLC fellows. If you would like an invitation to participate, please sign up here
