Alastair is a consulting economist, with a practice focusing on social goods, particularly health and aged care, and education. He has a background in public policy, including as Chief of Staff to health and ageing Ministers in the Australian Federal Government. Alastair is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

He is a graduate of the University of Sydney (Master of Commerce) and Franciscan University of Steubenville (Master of Arts in Catholic Theology). Alastair has two research foci: the efficient pricing and finance of healthcare services, including the ethical aspects of alternative pricing and funding models; and the synthesis between economic and theological questions, particularly as they bear on justice.
