Readings & Prayers for Sext Office (Ordinary Time)

Thursday, February 5, 2026

A moment of silence to quiet our hearts and to acknowledge that Christ is among us.

V. O God, come to my assistance.
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
R. as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Hymn

O God of truth and mighty Lord,
Directly all in wise accord,
You clothe the day with splendour bright,
The noonday sun gives warmth and light.

Extinguish all the flames of strife!
From sinful passions shield our life!
Give health and strength to us, O Lord,
True peace of heart to us afford!

To God the Father and the Son,
To Holy Spirit, three in one,
May praise and honour, glory be
To you, eternal Trinity. Amen

Psalmody

Ant. The Lord has shown forth his glory:
O come, let us adore him.

Psalm 123

A prayer for mercy: a pilgrimage song

To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens;
my eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords.

Like the eyes of a servant
on the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God
till he show us his mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.
We are filled with contempt.
Indeed all too full in our soul
with the scorn of the rich.
        (the disdain of the proud).

Psalm 124

Thanksgiving for protection: a pilgrimage song

“If the Lord had not been on our side,”
this is Israel’s song.
“If the Lord had not been on our side
when they rose up against us,
then would they have swallowed us alive
when their anger was kindled.

Then would the waters have engulfed us,
the torrent gone over us;
over our head would have swept
        the raging waters.”

Blessed be the Lord who did not give us
a prey to their teeth!
Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the fowler.

Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
        who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 125

Unshakable trust: a pilgrimage song

Those who put their trust in the Lord
are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken,
that stands for ever.
        Jerusalem! The mountains surround her;
so the Lord surrounds his people
        both now and for ever.

The sceptre of the wicked shall not rest
over the land of the just
for fear that the hands of the just
        should turn to evil.

Do good, Lord, to those who are good,
to the upright of heart;
but the crooked and those who do evil,
        drive them away!

        On Israel, peace!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. The Lord has shown forth his glory:
O come, let us adore him.

Short Reading

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

V. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
R. In verdant pastures he gives me repose.

Prayer

from the None Office – Trinity Service

Lord our God, you have called us to serve you and to love you; re-create us in the image of your Son, and direct our steps by the guidance of your Spirit, so that our life may proclaim your praises both now and for ever. Amen.

—Time for prayer, with a particular focus on KLC—

At the end of each petition please say, “Lord in your mercy…”
and the rest of us will respond, “… hear our prayer.”

A prayer to enter the silence:

Heavenly Father,

Open our hearts
to the silent presence
of the Spirit of your Son.

Lead us
into that mysterious silence
where your love is revealed
to all who call,

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

Presence

God is with me, but more, God is within me.
Let me dwell for a moment on God’s life-giving presence
in my body, in my mind, in my heart,
as I am here, right now.

Freedom

“In these days, God taught me as a schoolteacher teaches a pupil.” (Saint Ignatius).

I remind myself that there are things God has yet to teach me, and I ask for the grace to hear them and let them change me.

Consciousness

I exist in a web of relationships – links to nature, people, God. I trace out these links, giving thanks for the life that flows through them. Some links are twisted or broken: I may feel regret, anger, disappointment. I pray for the gift of acceptance and forgiveness.

The Word of God

Mark 6:7-13

He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff: no bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Response: Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Inspiration

The disciples went out in the Lord’s name, believing that they had something life-giving to offer. Their enthusiasm, hope and trust may very well have prepared the ground they were going to till and blessed the work they felt they had been sent to do. Theirs is a good attitude to emulate as we go about our own tasks.

Conversation

How has God’s Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me and I turn and share my feelings with Him.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
