KLC’s PhD Partnership with Highland Theological College

KLC is excited to announce that Highland Theological College (HTC) has been added as another partner for our PhD supervision programme. Like KLC, HTC stands in the evangelical tradition and has a rich history of ministry training and academic research at the highest levels. Based in Dingwall, Scotland, HTC is a member college of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).

Like other research PhD programmes in the UK, KLC’s partnership with HTC allows students to jump straight into research and writing, without the need for completing additional coursework first. This also means that students can complete their PhD without having to uproot from a ministry or other vocational context for the 3-year full time, 6-year part time programme.

HTC’s Principal, Dr. Jamie Grant, says that “We at Highland Theological College UHI are absolutely delighted to enter into this exciting new partnership with the Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology. Our theology, values and approach to postgraduate research supervision align very closely and we believe that this will be an exciting opportunity for Kingdom service together in the years to come. Postgraduate research degrees are at the cutting edge of the development of theological thought for our cultural moment and generation. It is exciting to be able to push those reflective boundaries together with KLC in a collegial and collaborative manner—one that encourages us to think creatively, yet to grow and develop in the light of the wisdom of the ages. We welcome this new partnership with a real sense of excitement and expectation.”

KLC’s Director, Dr. Craig Batholomew, writes: “Done well, by both student and supervisor, PhD research can be profoundly formative. At KLC we aim and hope to form a new generation of outstanding Christian scholars and our new partnership with HTC is central to this goal. Mike Wagenman and I have thought long and hard about PhD research and we have developed a missional approach and a supervisors’ course to induct them into this. I have known Dr. Jamie Grant since our days at the University of Gloucestershire and am thankful and delighted at the opportunities this new partnership presents.”

Sara Osborne, one of KLC’s current students, reflects on her experience of KLC’s supervision of her PhD research: “KLC’s PhD programme has given me opportunities for community engagement and collaboration, mentorship by others who have walked this path ahead of me, encouragement to think creatively, and the exhortation to pursue excellent scholarship that is ultimately oriented towards the praise of our Maker. I am continually being equipped and empowered to hone my thinking and use my gifts for the glory of God, and for the good of the church and the world.”

KLC’s Director of PhD Studies, Dr. Michael Wagenman, says that this partnership will allow KLC to build on and expand its commitment to student academic formation by offering more seminars, conferences, and institutional support for students during the completion of their PhD programme.
