Readings & Prayers for Holy Week

Thursday, April 2, 2026

A moment of silence to quiet our hearts and to acknowledge that Christ is among us.

V. O God, come to my assistance.
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
R. as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Music: “Into Bright Shadow”

Composed by Dr Josh Rodriguez, KLC Associate Fellow, featuring pianist Mary Vanhoozer-Rodriguez, KLC Associate Fellow. An attempt to musically recreate a “glimpse of the beauty of another world that awakened a yearning both for that world and for the experience of desiring that world” (C.S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy).

Brief silence to quiet our hearts and to acknowledge that Christ is among us.

Poem: "A Beautiful Thing"

By Sara Osborne, KLC Associate Fellow

Jesus was there: at Bethany where
 Simon sat and Lazarus rose and
  breathed—the table set in joy.
   Dinner thick with life, Martha served
    and Mary broke her costly jar of nard
     on Jesus’s head and feet: a sacrifice
      of worship filling every nose—and
       dripping down single strands of hair,
        seeping into the Savior’s pores:
         “She has done a beautiful thing.”
        Then sin released its stench
       in Judas’s open-handed traitor
      act—the smell of death unleashed
     around a second table. In blessed
    sorrow Jesus tore the bread and
   offered wine from thick-stemmed
  vine to gathered guests: a funeral
 meal prepared his tomb of absence.
The Lord has done a beautiful thing.

*A reflection on Matthew 26:6-29; Mark 14: 3-25; John 12: 1-8.

V. O God, come to my assistance.
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
R. as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Hymn

Sing we now a hymn of triumph
Of the Cross on which Christ died!
On that Cross his life he offered
That with him we might abide.

By that tree that was forbidden
We were all once doomed to die;
But the tree on which Christ suffered
For our sins did satisfy.

To the Father, Son and Spirit,
Equal praise be given now,
As we call to mind Christ’s Passion,
And in deep repentance bow. Amen.

Psalmody

Ant. In the same way that the Father knows me, I know the Father. And for my sheep I give my life.

Psalm 142

A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. (Read responsively.)

With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
     with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.

I pour out my complaint before him;
     I tell my trouble before him.

When my spirit faints within me,
     you know my way!
In the path where I walk
     they have hidden a trap for me.

Look to the right and see:
     there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
     no one cares for my soul.

I cry to you, O Lord;
     I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

Attend to my cry,
     for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
     for they are too strong for me!

Bring me out of prison,
     that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
     for you will deal bountifully with me.

Ant. In the same way that the Father knows me, I know the Father. And for my sheep I give my life.

Short Reading

Hebrews 7:26-27

It was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself.

V. It was our infirmities that he bore.
R. It was our guilt that he carried.

Prayer

from the None Office – Trinity Service

Almighty God, life and salvation of all who love you, grant that we who look forward to the celebration your Son’s paschal mystery with holy expectation may come to share in the glory of his resurrection. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer to enter the silence:

Heavenly Father,

Open our hearts
to the silent presence
of the Spirit of your Son.

Lead us
into that mysterious silence
where your love is revealed
to all who call,

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

John 13:1-15

1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

This is the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
Praise to you, Lord Christ.
